Gigs and Cons

Live: Postmodern Jukebox in Galway

At the end of April, I went to Galway with my friends, for a ladies’ weekend, but also for a concert by the New York cover band Postmodern Jukebox.

Postmodern Jukebox was formed in New York in 2011 thanks to Scott Bradley. Originally, the band focused on Nickelback covers, but after a while they decided to change direction. The band does cover songs all the time, but they cover different artists and mostly in the style of the 1920s.

Okay, I’ve introduced the band to you, and now let’s go to the concert itself. Postmodern Jukebox stopped at several locations in Ireland during their European tour, but Galway suited us best. The concert took place on Saturday evening April 20th at Leisureland in Galway. I spent the whole weekend in Galway with my friends, if you are interested in how we liked it there, you can read my article here.

Leisureland is not only a concert venue, there is an indoor pool and a water slide, and an outdoor Ferris wheel and other attractions. The entire area is then located in Salthill part of Galway. We arrived at the concert around seven, when they were opening the doors and there wasn’t even a queue yay To our surprise, the venue only had chairs and no standing. We had standing tickets because Ticketmaster didn’t sell any others, but apparently plans changed. We were all very happy because we are not young anymore…

The concert started at 8 and ended a little after 10 and there was no opening act. Yes, they only played Postmodern Jukebox for two hours. We were accompanied in the evening by one of the band members, who also gave completely insanely amazing covers of Imagine Dragons (Radioactive) and Kings of Leon (Use Somebody). Apart from him, the band had 3 female singers who took turns on stage or performed together, and on top of that, the band brought along a tap dancer who introduced herself to us about three times and hats off. Three minutes straight of tap dancing and jumping, my knees hurt for her. The rest of the band was made up of musicians, with the drummer sometimes popping in and singing for us. Everyone was then dressed in the spirit of the 20s and the main actors changed their clothes several times during the evening.

As for the covers, as I already mentioned, there were Imagine Dragons and Kings of Leon, but also the main song from the game Mario, or perhaps a classic by Taylor (Love Story). Postmodern Jukebox also had U2, Michael Jackson, Meghan Trainor or The Weeknd ready. In addition to the excellent host, we were also entertained by one of the singers when she was looking for someone to take her for traditional fish & chips after the concert.

Of course I got a headache during the concert and hurt my eardrums there (that’s a tip for you to wear earplugs in noisy places) but even though I didn’t know all the songs it was a fun night and it was something new for a change.
